On Top of Mountains - Mountain Themed Nursery Room Design
One of the most exciting parts of being pregnant was decorating the nursery. We knew we wanted the nursery to be gender neutral (even knowing it was a boy), able to grow with our son and we wanted it to really feel like us. A mountain themed nursery was the perfect answer!
We both love being outside in nature. Some of our favorite trips have been 5 day backpacking adventures in Northern Michigan and Utah, we fell in love with our first home because of the woods and hiking trails out back, and we are always, ALWAYS down to go for a hike. We truly hope that our son grows up with as much of a love of the outdoors as we do.

Mountain Themed Nursery Mural
We decided we wanted a focal point mountain wall in the nursery and we reached out to my Uncle (who is an insanely, mega talented human being) to see if he could paint one for us. We sent him 2 or 3 shots from Pinterest as inspiration, chose a few paint colors, and then let him take it from there. The mountain nursery wall turned out better than I ever could have imagined. He designed it himself, mixed some of the paint colors himself and drew it on the wall free hand. Honestly… so talented.
Furniture
When it came to picking out our mountain nursery furniture, I wanted to make sure we found something that was good quality, non-toxic and would keep the room light since our wall color was a bit darker. We ended up ordering from a site called Delta Children. Their products are all non-toxic and free from heavy metals, lead and other substances that could harm your baby. They’re also super affordable and offer bundles where you can get a crib, a mattress, a dresser and a glider at a reasonable price. The crib and glider below are part of the Heartland Collection, which centers around the Heartland 4-in-1 crib. It will grow with our son as a crib, toddler bed, daybed and then a full size bed frame. We loved the simplistic style of the pieces in this site and the light white color. Overall, we are happy with the quality and would definitely recommend this site to anyone else. Full disclosure: we did start out with a SNOO for our son, which is what you see in the photo above. This was by far the priciest item we bought but it can be used for more than one child and has a great resale value.
On the wall across from the mountain mural, crib and glider, we placed the dresser. Since we opted for a separate changing table, the dresser was small and seemed a little bare on a big wall. I really wanted something to take up more space and give it a bit more character. I decided I wanted to display some books and figurines on the wall, but all the floating bookshelves I found seemed short and impractical for putting more than one book on. Finally, on Amazon I found a set of floating bookshelves that are about 2 1/2 feet long and looked perfect in the room. We put those right over the dresser and I love how they turned out. We have some of our favorites displayed, including some from both of our childhoods.
Mountain Themed Nursery Touches
You’ll also notice the insanely gorgeous wooden name piece. This was a gift from my sister that she ordered off Etsy and it fits so perfectly in the nursery. It was one of my favorite surprise gifts. The fox you see comfortably resting on the hatch is a GUND stuffed animal that was purchased for us off our registry. These are seriously some of the softest stuffed animals on the planet and the fox fits the mountain & woodland nursery theme well.
On top of my Uncle being mega talented, so is his daughter (my cousin!) I remember a few years ago she painted the cutest pictures for my nieces to go in their rooms and I really wanted some pieces for Rayland’s room too. I found a few woodland type prints for inspiration on Etsy and Pinterest. They were basically silhouettes of animals in the woods. I sent them to her for inspiration and she painted two as a gift to bring some more woodland decor to the nursery. We love how they turned out and have them displayed prominently above our changing table. Our changing table is also a Delta Children’s product, but we found it on Amazon. Its not part of the Heartland line, but it ended up matching really well between the color and the slats that compliment the crib. We wanted to make sure it didn’t look a total mess and found these gray baskets on Amazon that we use to organize diapers, blankets, burp clothes, etc.
Above the crib is one of my favorite pieces in the space - a woodland bear mobile that my mom bought for the room off of Etsy. It’s a beautifully made piece, soft and adds a fun element to the room with a bear and mountains. It’s one of Rayland’s favorite things in there. Each time we get him up out of the crib, he gets excited when he sees it and grabs for it. I’m waiting for the day he will most definitely get a death grip on it and pull it down, but until then it will just hang there all pretty like.
Closet Organization
The last bit to show you is the closet. We kept the mountain themed nursery color scheme of greens, dark blues, whites and gray throughout the whole room - even in here! We have a white bookcase on the floor for the overflow of books and a few toys. The green baskets on top of the shelves keep our extra sheets, mattress covers, bath towels, etc organized and keep it from looking like a mess. These size dividers were gifted to us by a friend (you can find similar on Amazon) and are a small detail that really helps.
This mountain themed nursery is by far our favorite room in the house. It’s the first room we designed top to bottom on our own and we are unbelievably happy with how it turns out. We tried to design it in a way that will be great for our son now and when he’s 3 or 8 or even 14. With that in mind, I’d call it a true success.
